Healthy eating with the eco cooker

The old traditional cookers were the best eco friendly cookers ever made and were far more energy efficient than the modern electric or gas version. In Victorian times cooking was done in an oven which was set within a large fireplace called a range, and these were multi purpose eco friendly heating systems which ran on coal or wood. They could keep the room warm and be a place to cook bread and roast meat.

The nearest equivalent nowadays is the Aga stove which too can be run on a natural fuel, has hotplates on the top and two ovens below. The Aga can provide heating, hot water and be an oven, all rolled into one. It’s not unusual to find the household which has an eco friendly heating system also has an Aga for cooking.

As well as being the most environmentally friendly form of cooking it has the added benefit of producing the best in the way of roasts and meat cooking. The cooker has not need for flames or controlled current – it simply heats up and the person cooking the meal puts the dish in the oven and leaves it to gently cook away. Casseroles are particularly good as they can be left to simmer for ages, and in some case, the longer the better –within reason!
