3 Eco-Friendly Tips You Can Use for Your Home Heating

Finding effective methods to save money on your energy bill is not as difficult as one may think. The additional bonus to these three eco-friendly tips is none of them require purchasing additional equipment or costly systems. Although in the future you may wish to consider switching to more efficient alternative renewable systems, you can save money in the meantime.

Green Tip 1

Go through your home and check the window frames for any air leaking in or out of your room. If this is the case, use caulking or weatherproof sealant to seal up any leaks or you can use weather stripping which can be tacked up or simply peel and stick. Adding heavier curtains or drapes can also keep the cool air out and the warm air in.

Also check under the doors for air leaks. You can use a door snake or install door sweeps. This will also keep insects from coming into your home as well.

Green Tip 2

One of the easier ways to save energy is making sure the size of your heating is appropriate for the size of your room. Most of the time, large heating systems are just too big, use too much energy and leaves you scared to see the next month’s bill. You could either adjust the heat in one degree increments until the family feels comfortable or purchase a small space heater which uses less energy and can be a great supplement. It’s been established that you could feasibly save 10% on your heating costs with every degree you can lower your thermostat!

Green Tip 3

Have an energy audit conducted in your home. This person will go through and find any issues that might be energy wasting such as leaks, cracks, dirty filters, outdated heating systems, etc. Ask them to recommend the best times to schedule maintenance calls and performance checks and add these dates to your calendar. This also includes scheduling regular cleaning of your filters and flushing out any lines that may freeze up if not properly maintained. Regular maintenance of your existing energy systems will not only save you money every month on your heating and cooling, but you will also extend the life of your systems a lot longer.
